Orihuela has been teaching youngsters at their summer camp how to save water in their own homes .
Low flow aerating heads , which are attached to taps , were demonstrated to the children . They reduce the amount of water used by mixing it with air .
200 low flow aerating heads were handed out to the children and local shops have been offering them for free during this first phase of the town council’s campaign .
Primary school children will also be presented with them at the beginning of the new term .

A transformer in a block of flats in Muchamiel , near Alicante , cauded 60 apartments to be evacuated last Sunday .
It seems that this transformer has already broken down a number of times and on this occasion a spark started a fire which set alight materials which caused a great deal of black , acrid smoke .
Residents were evacuated because of the danger from the smoke . They all returned once the fire had been put out , although they were then without electricity for many hours afterwards .
The residents are calling for a complete overhaul of the transformer now .

A number of people have fallen in the streets of Benidorm because of the state of the pavements .
The claims engendered because of this has caused the council to review its public liability policy .
In 2002 the council would cover the first 600 euros of any claim whereas in 2006 that figure had gone up to 6,000 euros .
To ensure cover , the council has to pay a premium of 60,000 euros .This year two claims came to 36,000 euros and the council paid the first 6,000 of each one .

There were high seas dramas when a Santa Pola fishing boat came across aboat full of immigrants , on their way to Spain .
The boat was stranded 100 miles off the coast of Libya this month .
The fishermen were confronted with a boat full of exhausted and dehydrated people , 10 of whom had died .
The survivors were taken to Libya but were not allowed to land until diplomatic channels had been cleared . Even then some of the occupants were too scare to go ashore .This is the fifth time that Santa Pola fisherman have intervened in a humanitarian venture such as this .
THe Cam bank is sponsoring this year’s ” Cetaceos 2008 ” and this invoves supporting 150 divers who are going to help clean up the seabed around the island of Tabarca , Benidorm , Cabode las Huertas , Torrevieja and Santa Pola .
There is a particular type of alga which is growing out of all proportion and is threatening the delicate ecosystems of these areas .
